How do Tasters work?
-
Because sailing is an outdoor sport, the weather will have an effect on your Session.
For the more adventurous, a windy day will provide an exciting experience while a day with lighter winds will allow you to experience the relaxation and serenity of sailing.
Precipitation and temperature can also effect your experience so you'll be contacted a few days before your Session to confirm that everything is still going ahead or to give you the option to rebook if the conditions aren't expected to be suitable.
In the event of a postponement, you'll be able select another available date from the Reservations page.

Please Note:
If you really don't like getting wet, sailing probably isn't for you since you'll have to walk into the water up to your knees to get into the boat and there's always a chance that the boat will fall over (capsize) during the Session: don't worry too much about this, it's unlikely to happen, but you can request it!
If you like your Sailing Experience and want to get involved with the sport, RYA Courses are available throughout the year! If you're a member of YDSC, you'll also get access to free training and coaching days.

What about the boat?
-
Like road vehicles, boats are designed and produced to suit particular requirements. You'll find boats that can be compared to motorbikes, people carriers, 4x4s, estates and sports cars.
Each different type of boat is called a class and many have an Owners Club called a Class Association.
Where the performance of a car can be measured by its horse power, classes of boats compare their performance with a Racing Handicap (PY) number. Unlike cars however, the PY number falls as performance increases, so the smaller the PY number, the faster the boat.
If classes of boats with different performances race against each other, they can use the PY number to balance out the speed differences so that the slower boats don't have a disadvantage.
You'll most likely be sailing in a Laser Vago which would be similar to a sporty hatchback in the list above. It's an asymmetric rotomould dinghy with a trapeze that can have a crew of 1 or 2 people and it's the type of boat you'll see on the videos and pictures around the website. Some were taken aboard the original boat, 'On the Fly' while the latest footage was shot aboard the new want2sail boat called 'Sharknado'.
Both are National Championship winners and are set up to allow you to get involved as a crew member or sit back and enjoy the experience.
Your own video
It's likely that your Session will be recorded for training, promotional and safety purposes. If you'd like a short High Definition MP4 Video presentation of your session please inquire on the day. Videos cost £30.00 and examples can be seen in the Video Section .
